No, nothing to do with nitroglycerine. Demolition party enthusiasts, don't bother. Focus on glycerin, a component with multiple virtues ultra-present in cosmetics, notably at Horace.
In cosmetics, there is little room for chance. Glycerin is an ingredient found in many products, from facial care to body and hair care. From the Greek glykerós, which means "sweet", this colourless, odourless and viscous component makes it possible to obtain creamy cosmetic products. It helps to make the skin and hair softer, smoother and more supple.
For the record, glycerine was discovered at the end of the 19th century, thanks to the process of saponification: the manufacture of soap from fats. At the time, it was obtained from animal fats. Today, glycerine is most often synthesised from vegetable oils such as coconut or soya. At Horace, it is found in our Rich Facial Moisturiser, as well as in our Facial Cleanser and After Shave Gel.
Moisturises and smoothes
Glycerin is a humectant chemical compound. What does that mean? This means that it has the ability to attract and retain water. In skincare products, it moisturises the skin and hair while slowing down the evaporation of water, in other words dehydration. In this way, it improves the elasticity of the skin and provides more comfort for skin that feels tight.
Strengthens and protects
Glycerine forms a protective layer when integrated into a skin care formula and applied to the skin. Like an invisible occlusive film, it reinforces the hydrological film, the famous skin barrier, on the surface of the epidermis. It stimulates the skin's natural defences and acts as a barrier against external aggressions: wind, cold and pollution.
Healing effect
And that's not all! Glycerine is so great that it plays a vital role in the skin's repair process. It promotes the synthesis of lipids and the production of collagen in the epidermis. The tissues are thus regenerated: that's healing.
With its moisturising and protective functions, glycerine is clearly one of the most coveted ingredients in cosmetics. It also has the merit of being easily produced and, therefore, of guaranteeing an affordable price for products. Isn't life great?
