From Bretagne in France, Maximilien is a thirty year-old singer, composer and songwriter who just released his first album De Virginie on the Agoria’s label Sapiens. It is inspired by the French Touch and has a pleasing avant-garde vibe. We talked with the young man about his inspirations, his relationship with music and Brad Pitt’s hair.
Have you always wanted to have a career in music ?
At the very beginning, it was my parents who made me play the piano. Then, I continued without questionning myself until I was 18 years old. At that time, some friends around me started to get into music bands, to do concerts and festivals. At that time, I started to compose and to like it. When I was 20, I joined my first music group. Before, I didn't necessarily think about it until I realized that I was always immersed in music. Then, when i was in biology school a few years later, i met some friends who wanted to start a music band called Cardinal, and then the rest happened.
How do you feel after the release of this first album De Virgine?
I'm glad he's finally out in the wild. It was written and composed during the first lockdown in France. Quite quickly. I'm glad. From a complicated situation, I was able to imagine and compose a record that I am proud of.
And now that it's out, are you putting pressure on yourself?
No, because at the moment it's not the priority. I'm mostly looking out for my friends and family, trying to keep a mental sanity. Music is part of that. I don't put any pressure on myself. Anyway, I'm just starting out so I'm taking everything that comes along!
What stories did you want to tell with this album ?
It’s not very original to say that, but this record is a journey. I hope it will help people to feel better in this particular context. During the first confinement in France, I watched a lot of films, historical or religious documentaries, about space. It really infused my imagination during the making of this album.
How would you define your style of music ?
It's a mix between electronic, pop and dump tempo music. In the album, there are also a lot of hip hop and r'n'b sounds because I listen to it a lot
Today, would you say that you feel good in your skin?
There's still work to be done... But with age, I'm getting more confident. What happens to me with the release of this first album, it feels good.
How do you take care of yourself ?
I do a bit of sport. Fitness mostly. And then the basics like hydration. I also like to smell good.
Is it important for you to take care of yourself?
Yes. Especially on special occasions. I'm going to try to get myself all dressed up and get a Brad Pitt haircut !
